In 2020, the City of London Corporation adopted a radical Climate Action Strategy, breaking new ground and setting out how we will achieve net zero, build climate resilience and champion sustainable growth, both in the UK and globally, over the next two decades.

By adopting the Strategy, the City Corporation has committed to:

  • Achieve net zero carbon emissions from our own operations by 2027
  • Achieve net zero carbon emissions across our investments and supply chain by 2040
  • Support the achievement of net zero for the Square Mile by 2040
  • Invest £68m over the next six years to support these goals of which £15m is dedicated to preparing the Square Mile for extreme weather events.

This followed an extensive study of our activities and assets to put a plan in place to address emissions from our operations, financial and property investments, full supply chain and collaborate with partners across the Square Mile.

Impact

We have set out a detailed action plan with annual targets, fully funded to 2027. We are addressing areas with the biggest impact first.

We are committed to transparently reporting progress on our Climate Action Performance Dashboard, an interactive tool that visualises the latest data and progress towards our net zero and climate resilience targets.

Each year, we publish a report of our annual emissions reductions and progress towards our targets following an independent audit.
